If you want good scanning, get something else - The C5180 printer is an excellent piece of hardware. It prints accurately, with good colour and is fast. I have not done much copying, but when I have, it does this well too. Unfortunately, when it comes to scanning, it is dire - truly dire. As I have read on numerous sites, HP markets excellent printer hardware, but the accompanying software is regularly woeful. Unfortunately for me, the C5180 is exactly one of those combinations. The scanning of pictures results in a salt & pepper type effect and there is no way changes to software, resolution, depth of colour, etc, will get you where you want your scans to be.What makes it worse is that HP online support know of this issue and are as helpful as they can be, but are clueless as to the resolution. So the support call goes on, and on, and on,...Consumables could be costly depending on how you use the printer. There are 5x colour cartidges and 1x black, and are sold individually and also as a single replacement pack with them all in.It is a shame that in the rush to market, HP did not test the C5180 for scan quality, so if you want good scans, look elsewhere.
Too slow on start up but OK. - Very slow to power up and to get ready for printing. Usual glitches with windows software.
Frustrating - Setting up was easy. The printer worked fine once installed, but after two weeks problems arose, probably after no more than 50 or so printouts. Constant error messages resulting from paper feed problems, still not resolved after several wasted hours following remedial procedures. Looks very much like a hardware problem which will lead to returning the printer to the supplier - leaving me temporarily without a printer and deeply frustrated and suspicious of what the replacement might be like.
HP disaster - I have had quite a few HP printers over the years and they have all been very reliable producing good quality prints. Unfortunately this one is a total disaster.Where do I start? It makes the most dreadful noise ...whirring away for no reason. If one of its many ink cartidges is empty .... it won t operate .... not even scan. The software for network use is enormous ....and creates all sorts of strange error messages on your PC ....and even prevents clean shut down of your system. The print quality is mediocre ...and to top it off .... after about 1 year of faltering use .... the scan light has just failed. I will not waste any more money on this printer/ scanner .... the bulb will not be replaced.
Best printer and scanner I have ever owned - Just bought this today and was up and running on Vista 64 bit (SP1) in 30 minutes with absolutely no problems. Scanning is fast and excellent quality. Range of options to scan to file/application/OCR/image editor etc. are brilliant and work excellently and seemlessly with Vista.I have owned a range of scanners over the years and I have never had one which was remotely reliable (last one was an Epson). The HP C5180 all in one works flawlessly and the speed is amazing (printing and scanning). I have been putting of digitising hundreds of old 35mm photo prints for ages, but now I have no excuse. The seemless interface with the HP photosmart software will make the job a doddle.
